Background & Mission
Thomas T. Terramani, M.D. is a board certified vascular surgeon with dedicated and focused expertise in anterior surgical approaches to the lumbar spine. Provides co-surgical care for patients with lumbar spine disease at 10 hospitals in San Diego County. He has been in practice in San Diego since 2003.
Dr. Terramani completed his medical degree, internship, and residency in general surgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He then completed a two-year fellowship in vascular surgery and Endovascular therapy at Emory Univeristy in Atlanta, Georgia. At the completion of his surgical training, he moved to San Diego and established Vascular Associates of San Diego with senior partner Dr Vincent Guzzetta.
He is committed to improving surgical education for the lumbar spine minimally invasive technique. Providing various forms of surgical education to young surgeons in training and colleagues wanted to acquire more insight in the spine approach techniques. He has been involved in over 45 peer-reviewed medical journal publications and has authored 8 surgical book chapters on various topic in vascular care. His major area of interest is the surgical exposure of the lumbar spine. Recently he authored the a chapter in 2nd edition Atlas of Vascular Surgery & Endovascular Therapy 2025 a chapter on Lumbar Spine Exposures. He has helped develop novel retractor systems and pathways to the lumbar spine to aid in the safe and consistent surgical exposure of the lumbar spine. In addition, he has been awarded numerous United States patents for novel surgical retractor systems and techniques used for the mobilization and exposure of the anterior aspect of the lumbar spine.
Dr. Terramani is committed and passionate in the care of patients and providing safe and reproducible approaches to the lumbar spine for the management of spinal disorders.
